Taken on the same day as the shot of Teignmouth from Shaldon (below), this was quite a tough shot to get. Partly because it’s taken looking straight into the sun but mostly because of the insane amount of sea spray coming across the promenade from the onshore wind. I wanted to get really close to the edge so I could catch the best of the breakers so I was tucking my camera under my coat, dashing up to the railing, grabbing my 3 shots – shooting into the sun, bracketing, +2, -2 and on the nail – before high tailing it back behind a nearby shelter to wipe off camera and lens. Lots of salt, lots of water, expensive and very wet camera. If I’m going to do too much more of this I’m really going to have to get some camera protection.
Teignmouth Harbour viewed from Shaldon

Easterly winds in this part of the world push the seas up against the coast and we get some spectacular shore breaks. Usually the skies are overcast when this happens but occasionally we get them with fine weather and at this time of year, when the sun’s low in the sky from dawn to dusk we get all day golden hours and the light is fabulous.
This is taken from Shaldon, just below the Ness and looking torward Teignmouth Harbour. It’s where, when I wasn’t paying attention for a moment, a big breaker dumped a ton on me before I could get my camera out of the way. I’m really not looking after my kit at the moment.
Landscapes and seascapes
There's an awesome pool of musical talent in S. Devon
which surfaces mostly at jam nights in local pubs where amateur,
pro and semi-pro get together play and enjoy each other's
music. The shots in this collection are from Tuesday nights at the
Church House Inn, Stokeinteignhead, just outside Torquay
Every year, around August, the Newton Abbot race course gives over to Lemonfest,
South Devon's biggest music festival. In 2010 Reef headlined, I
managed to blag a pit pass and covered my first music event for many years.
The Town of St Marychurch celebrates the Royal Wedding of 2010 with a street party in Fore Street. Food, ballon sculpting,
face painting and a magician.
Once or twice a month I visit James Sharpe, drum teacher, for instruction and
from time to time we trade photography instead of money for lessons. Here are some shots of his
new studio just outside Totnes
Portraits and street photography
In April 1981, around lunchtime, I stepped out of a shop in Brixton and
a car burst into flames some 20 yards up the street, marking the start of the
worst episode of civil disobedience Britain had
seen in over 100 years. These are some of the pictures from that day
